Pamela describes the sufferings, trials, and vicissitudes undergone by a poor, but beautiful and innocent, country girl who enters the service of a rich gentleman.

Pamela Samuel Richardson 9781540703422 Books

This is regarded as the first English novel. It is a long nutty book. Pamela is a commoner who stands up to a number of aristocrats. That's a good thing. She also is kidnapped, tortured, and abused. A young man attempts to rape her. (He's the guy who kidnaps her.) He tries to make her his mistress. Eventually, he gives up and tells her she can go home to her parents. She gets half way home and realizes she loves him and returns to him. That's a bad thing. It is also an epistolary novel. Most of the book is letters that are so long and detailed one wonders when Pam had time to eat or sleep. About a 10th of the book is a journal. And about 2 pages are third person narration. It is the least effective use of letters I have ever read. So, it is a rather absurd story not told terribly well. So why three stars? It is a first.

its a school book that my Daughter needed for a class - that's about all I can really say about it.
I bought this book for a class called Sex and Intercourse in 18th Century Literature, which, might I add, is a BLAST. I would say that the first part of the book is a little nerve wracking but having finished the book, I can see why so much time was spent on it. Beyond what the book as about on the surface, there is a great deal of insight into class structures and I am actually doing a creative writing project from the point of view of a secondary character. If you are interested in literature from this time, you really need to read this book.
Copy arrived earlier than expected and in great condition. Preface and footnotes helpful for a novel that is often a slow read .Richardson was a favorite author of Jane Austen but not her literary equal !
Very long, but intriguing. Charming, and sometimes a bit confusing because of the unique way of expression in that time.
Gift requested by my son. Way above my pay grade). Very appreciative.
Great textbook at a great price!
"The rest of the story" is nicely done. Pamela, now Mrs. B is continually upheld by those around her for her virtue and many of her husband's set are drawn to her for it. As we watch them stay their life and family together they are faced with some challenges, but we watch as Pamela continues to manifest many good qualities of character. She learns about household and spousal management and the importance of communication. She also contemplates the education and rearing of children.

Some of the ideals may be outdated in our more gender equal society, but many of the virtues Pamela displays and the lessons she learns can be just as applicable today in a variety of relationships.
